Gas Permeable Contact Lenses

Gas permeable contact lenses are harder plastic lenses which give crystal clear vision and are more durable than the soft variety. They are primarily made from silicone and therefore allow oxygen to pass through the lens. This is important as the eye needs plenty of oxygen to be healthy which also results in greater eye comfort. Gas Permeable lenses actually allow more oxygen to pass through them than most soft lenses.

Gas Permeable (GP) contact lenses can take a little while to get used to as they are harder than the water based soft lenses but if you are willing to persevere you will be rewarded with clearer vision. GP lenses are also highly durable and therefore in the long run can be more economic than soft contact lenses which perish much more quickly and require regular outlay.

Because GP lenses are more rigid, when the wearer blinks the lens retains its shape better than a soft lens, therefore the result is sharper vision. GP lenses are not made from water (in the way that soft lenses are) and therefore protein and lipids from years do not adhere to the lens. They do not tear easily like soft lenses.

GP lenses are suitable for those with near or far sightedness (both bifocal and multi-focal options are available in GP lenses). People with astigmatism often find that GP lenses are more effective than soft lenses.

There are some disadvantages to choosing GP lenses. They require scrupulous hygiene as they last for more than one year. They can also take some time to get used to, for example if you refrained from wearing them for a week they would be a little uncomfortable once you resume wearing them. Some GP wearers find that they experience blurred vision when not wearing lenses and eyeglasses do not lessen the effect. This means that choosing GP lenses can be something of a commitment but again if you choose these types of lenses then you will find the best deals right here at contact lenses by post.
