Extended Wear Contact Lenses
Extended Wear lenses are generally disposable, although they can range from weekly to monthly disposables. Extended wear lenses are for those who want to wake up with clear vision the minute you open your eyes. Extended wear lenses are designed to allow the optimum amount of oxygen to the eye, ensuring the most comfortable fit, which is of paramount importance as they are worn night and day. Here at contact lenses by post we compare a large selection of extended wear contact lenses.
Extended wear lenses can vary on the length of time the wearer can continue to wear them, ranging from one week to one month without removal. Extended wear lenses are available in both soft and gas permeable, the latter are sometimes referred to as “continuous wear lenses” and can be worn for up to a month at a time.
There have been vast improvements in this type of lens which make them a safe choice for contact lens wearers. For example, originally soft extended wear lenses were removed weekly or monthly for cleaning, in a contact lens solution. Due to the material the lens was made of, not all eye infection causing proteins and lipids were removed from the lens. This caused discomfort, inflammation and infection in the wearer. Now, as they are disposable the risk of protein and lipid build up is greatly reduced. The exception to this is of course gas permeable extended wear lenses which, due to the properties of the lens, prevent the proteins and lipids from sticking to them.
However, as the risk of poor eye health is increased by keeping lenses in every night, it is important to bear in mind that everyone’s eyes are different and you must do what suits you and your eye health. For example, if you have 30 day continuous wear lenses and your eyes begin to feel uncomfortable or look red or you experience blurred/poor vision, then remove the lenses and seek advice from your optician.
